the other white meat

yesterday I went on a tour of my old high school with my student who will be attending there next year. I went with another one-on-one aide and her student, plus the behavior specialist at my school who has arranged visits as part of the transitioning we're doing for the two kids. we had gone a week earlier and done a very cursory layout walk-through with them - main office, gym, auditorium, library, etc. my student was most interested in where the cafeteria was located (and I was duly impressed to find out that they have recently installed booth seating for lunch - something I wish I'd had back when my very antisocial teen self hated half the people who sat at my 8 person round table - the booths conveniently accommodate dining cliques of just 4).

anyway, the visit yesterday included specific teachers and classrooms the kids will have next year, and in the science lab the class was doing fetal pig dissection! oddly enough, as much as I despise most biology coursework, I simply love dissecting organisms. I've done fish, frogs, sheep trachea, cow eyeballs, squid, but never a fetal pig. it was so neat! I was surprised how big the pig was - maybe 14" nose to tail, and 8" or so from spine to hoof. we got to see the brain, lungs, liver, small and large intestines, and heart. but the very best part was seeing the behavioral specialist squirm and gag in the hallway as he waited outside for us - he and his wife are vegetarian and vegan respectfully. it made our kids feel a little cooler to know they could handle witnessing what their adult counterpart couldn't. hehe.

the capstone of the event was the BLT sub I had for dinner. yum!

oh nooo...the fetal pig. my bio group was hilary, robin g, and shane perna. we rotated tasks daily and i ended up with the job of SKINNING the pig. i threw up in the bathroom half way through.
really??! eww, sorry. but how was it that your class did fetal pigs and mine didn't?
I don't know...what year did you take bio? This was in 9th grade - Mrs. Carnathan was our teacher. I think the 10th grade bio may have done different stuff.
ohh... I had 9th grade, too, but with Mr. Peace
